Today’s guest will be Dr. Barry Burak, a pioneer in treating people who have been catastrophically injured, Dr. Barry has been helping attorneys severely injured clients for nearly 50 years. Welcome, Dr. Burak.

Dr. Barry Burak  | 00:35

Thank you very much.

Rene Perras | 00:36

Glad you were able to come on the show today to answer a few questions. About yourself and your medical expertise and how you’ve been committed to helping people recover from injuries while regaining their lost quality of life. So I guess we have a couple of questions we’re going to talk about today. And the first one is about your personal journey and expertise.

As the founding member of the affiliated healthcare group, or center, you have an impressive record of helping the injured for nearly 50 years. You have developed strategic partnership with all types of groups.

Dr. Barry Burak | 01:13

Yes, we have.

Rene Perras | 01:18

From attorneys to other medical  professionals and healthcare Groups. As a medical service professional, tell us what’s changed over time.

Dr. Barry Burak | 01:23

What’s changed over time, and especially in our practice, is the expanse that you can treat people. I am basically a chiropractor but as a chiropractor we’re limited to what we do in and how we can treat people. But because of what affiliated healthcare has become, We can treat it all. Why? We have our own MRI that does the DTI for traumatic brain. Most MRIs are 30 to 40 minutes. Ours is 15 to 18. We have two state certified surgical suites. We have orthopedic extremity. We have a neurosurgeon neurologist, podiatrist, a physiatrist who does pain management, Nurse practitioners, PTs, PTAs, chiropractors, massage therapists, a neuropsychologist.  We have all types of therapy. To help people. Plus, we are the only office in the state of Florida that has the whole total program to treat people with traumatic Brain injuries.

In other words, our MRI does the DTI that diagnostically determines it. Our neurologist correlates it. Our neuropsych correlates it. Our VNG shows the brain lesion. Then we do TBI rehab, cognitive therapy, balance testing, and EEG. So at one center with one to two days, We can do a complete workup. For people with traumatic brains. Well, what’s a traumatic brain? It’s most of the time is when you’re in an accident or you slip and fall and you hit your head, or hit your head in something in the car. Or when someone rear ends you and you go back and if the head rests hard and what happens is the soft part of the brain goes forward and it’s the hard shell. Then it goes back and it’s the hard shell and then back again. It’s a traumatic brain injury. And that can and does severely affect people. But until this time. People did not realize that. And because of our direction and what we’ve done in our ability to help people with different professionals, we love to help people. And most doctors do not want to get involved with people in general accidents. They don’t like to get involved with attorneys or court or depositions or anything. And we found an area that we can really help people.

Rene Perras | 04:04

And traumatic brain injuries often are not diagnosed because people don’t see them. They just see the broken bones, they see that kind of stuff. They don’t realize how much the brain has been affected.

Dr. Barry Burak | 04:16

Exactly. And if you go to the hospital and you get a CAT scan or an MRI of the brain, it doesn’t show it. But the basic way to see it is something called brain fog. You’re in an accident. And all of a sudden, what happened? Or you get out of the car, you don’t know what’s going on. Or you get dizzy or headaches or You can’t concentrate or you’re having problems with your relationships, with your family at work. There’s so many different things that are affected. But until now, people didn’t realize it. And it’s a severe problem. And sometimes it’s so debilitating that people are unable to work or to do anything anymore.

Rene Perras | 05:02

Well, that’s quite impressive. Dr. Barry, people come to you at their lowest point in their lives. When they’ve been hurt because of unsafe conditions or environments, When they tripped, slipped, and fell, When they were hit, Riding in cars. Involved in severe car crashes, suffering catastrophic and horrific injuries and losing their precious quality of life. What drew you to working with law firms? How did you find your calling? Was there a pivotal moment in your life that led you to take on the responsibility of caring and helping treat injured victims in South Florida.

Dr. Barry Burak | 05:42

Well, before I became a chiropractor, I sold insurance and work with some attorneys. I saw how that they can change a person’s life and because helping them after they’ve had a traumatic injury. Whether a car accident, slip and fall, assaults or victims of crime. And I found that I could do something and help people and do it directly and really see something happen that can really help people. To get better. And to realize what they have is sometimes they can’t get 100% better.

Rene Perras | 06:19

Makes sense. Tell us about the changes in technology and how these new advances you’re offering give law firms the ability to become more efficient.

Dr. Barry Burak| 06:29

Well, first of all, having an MRI is game-changer because it’s in-house if you go to the hospital they do cat scans and it really does not differentiate herniated discs, like an MRI does. Having the DTI, no MRI or a CAT scan to determine it because it’ll say, You had a concussion. But that doesn’t say… You’ve got a traumatic brain injury or TBI. And that’s what’s so important. Also too, we use something called PRP. Platelet rich plasma. Kobe, Dwyane Wade, Tiger Woods did PRP in their knee.

Why? So they didn’t have to do surgery replacements. You take a tube of blood, spin it and get your platelet-rich plasma. That’s what heals the body. And that’s what’s great because you inject it in the joint and the body heals the body. And you can do that one to three times. And we do that very often because people get seriously injured and need surgery. And they’re afraid or they can’t take off work or they don’t want to do it. Or sometimes it’s just the trauma and they have a problem, but they don’t need surgery, but that’s a malingering problem. And we can help to get rid of it by doing it. And it’s such a really great thing. I remember I had one woman who was 300 pounds and she was injured in an accident, severely injured her knee and she could not do surgery. I happened to bump into her two years on the street and Dall-E could do was rave to me, Dr. Burak. Thank you for that PRP because I didn’t have to have surgery. And it got me well. I don’t have that knee problem.

So what is that worth when you don’t have to get surgery and rehab and be off your feet and not be able to work or live your life as you ordinarily do? It is a beautiful thing.

Rene Perras | 08:35

PRP sounds revolutionary.

Dr. Barry Burak | 08:37

Platelet-rich plasma. And by the way, Kardashian sisters call it the vampire facelift. Wow. So, it does my hair. I’ve done lines on my face. I’ve done it on the back of my hands because my veins were really coming out. And in my low back besides people that we do it on their extremities. And it’s really great. Helps to fill in the lines naturally instead of fillers that are chemicals. It helps to do the crow’s feet and it fills in the face when it needs to be done that. And helps to get rid of these big lines that I used to have.

Rene Perras | 09:18

It’s amazing. If we could help position yourself as a thought leader, in the medical community, where could you make your biggest impact? Would it be in educating the general public about what to expect from the lawyers they represent them, or something else.

Dr. Barry Burak | 09:36

It’s a combination of things because a lot of attorneys do not recognize some of the things we do. Because they don’t understand it. They haven’t learned or been taught about it. But because we have the gamut, we can do it all. And people don’t come to our office, then have to go to a place for an MRI, an orthopedist, a neurologist. We do our own testing with nerve conditions, EMGs I mean, we do it all. TVI’s I mean it’s amazing the stuff we do and even for surgical suites for our surgeons and We do pre-surgical examinations. And if need to be, we have cardiologists that we work with that do cardiac checkups before we do surgeries. Because sometimes people have medical problems and they need to be checked out. Even more so that our doctors in our office can do.

Rene Perras | 10:34

Is it fair to say that you’re a comprehensive medical center?

Dr. Barry Burak | 10:39

We are a total comprehensive medical center from A to Z. And it makes people’s lives so much easier. Simpler, And that’s what we want in life. Today, things get to it. Too confused, too much work. Too many hassles. And I like it that we have all in-house. And it makes it easy. And we have some of the greatest doctors in the world. And they’re not like, When you go to the doctor. He has to see 20 or 30 people and the nurse practitioner sees him and you’re lucky to get five minutes. Not with us. Our doctors have time. They can spend time with patients and we live to help people and we’re there to answer questions. How many times you go to the doctor and he goes through his whole thing and you want to ask a question, he’s out the door. You’re not getting helped. I mean, that’s the way medicine’s become. That’s not the way we are.

Rene Perras | 11:40

I have seen that happen to me.

Dr. Barry Burak | 11:42

Also too, we have all sorts of therapies. We have Shockwave. We have. Final decompression. Ultrasound. You name it, we have it all. And it makes it beautiful because different things help different people in different ways. And that’s why we do it.

Rene Perras | 12:04

Five years from now, How do you want to be known in the medical and legal community? What legacy are you trying to build?

Dr. Barry Burak | 12:14

The legacy that I’m building is we’re there to help people. Just like when we help The Athletes. Two months ago we had ballplayers from FIU. Six, eight. Six Five. Six, five. Six one and their basketball coach. Exam, x-rays, MRIs, PRP in stem cells. And Shockwave in two hours. You can’t get that done. Try to get an MRI today. Boy, you have to go to the doctor, then you have to go to therapy, and then the insurance company doesn’t want to do it because it’s cost of money. I and a patient told me it took them two months to get the results from an MRI. And we know they get it within 24 to three days immediately. It’s just become a boondoggle. With us? It’s simple. It’s easy. It’s mellow. And that’s the way I like it to be. And that’s how I want to be with doctors too.

Rene Perras | 13:19

I have one last question and you just brought it up. You mentioned stem cells. Last July, Governor DeSantis signed into law new legislation and that allows stem cell therapy. What are your thoughts about that?

Dr. Barry Burak | 13:34

My thoughts are just fabulous. Take PRP to the next level. It can really help you rejuvenate the skin. Hope that much more with arthritis. With tears, with so many things within the body. And now they’re seeing that it can do and be used. For other things. Some things I don’t even want to say that they’ve done and used it for because, you It’s just sometimes out of our purvey. But. It’s another thing. And it’s using it from the Whartonsburg Chili. From the baby’s placenta. And It’s just all real. And it’s great. And it helps in the healing. And helps that body get back to normalization. And more than anything, we want the body to get back to normalization. So it’s real pain. And go on with your life. As you want it to go on to.

Rene Perras | 14:37

Is Florida the only state I’m in the republic that currently allows this type of therapy?

Dr. Barry Burak | 14:44

Yes, it is. It used to be that you had to go to Costa Rica, the Dominican Republic, Mexico, Panama, whatever. Florida has released it. And it’s now being used in so many ways. And they’re investigating it. He is even many more. So it’s really fabulous. As it to have. In our ability, plus We do some aesthetics. Where we help people with their skin, their face, their hair. It’s just a great tool. And it just is another level to how we can help. “, and make a difference in their lives.

Rene Perras | 15:27

Well, it’s a wonderful alternative. To do it without having to go under the knife.

Dr. Barry Burak | 15:34

Today, You know, there’s too many problems. They say 3% of the people that have, are intubated, You know, There’s serious relationships and serious problems. Can even mean death. And surgery is not perfect. And sometimes they’ll do a back surgery in three to seven years. You might need to have it done again. And the same with knee replacements. And surgeries and if you can get the body to heal the body, that’s the best thing in the world and that’s what we love to do.

Rene Perras | 16:12
